Insurance for Technical Divers

Many diving experts and dive associations have different descriptions of what technical diving is, so when it’s so difficult for experts to agree what Technical Diving means, you would think it’s even harder for us to define the risk in insurance terms.

At Dive Master Insurance we have some sympathy for the idea that “all diving is technical,” more so given the widespread use of sophisticated dive computers that significant numbers of divers certified only as recreational divers routinely use not only as a safety aid for “No Stop Diving” but also to conduct dives that require at least one mandatory decompression stop.

Many of the diving associations consider decompression diving involving mandatory stops is the start of Technical Diving and a good argument for specialized training and associated advanced certification.

In the past the use of any breathing gas other than Air in diving was also considered to be technical diving.  But given the widespread use of Nitrox gas, now used in preference to Air to make recreational diving safer, just being a certified Nitrox diver on a “No Stop Dive” is not considered to be technical diving.

Currently using semi-closed or closed circuit rebreathers or using side-slung open circuit kit configurations still is considered to be Technical Diving. But as the popularity of these systems increase they may too be absorbed into what we consider to be a wider based recreational form of diving.

So as the sport of recreational diving moves on it’s important we re-evaluate our understanding of our sport and make sure that our insurance policies meet the ever changing challenges that the sport brings with it.

Over the last twenty five years we have developed all our insurance policies to give the widest possible cover to divers who not only want to dive recreationally, but to divers who want to engage in diving of a more technical nature.
